Add WhatsApp to your Notify.lk messaging
Send OTPs, order updates and reminders on WhatsApp through an API that’s as simple as the one you use for SMS. Keep SMS for promotions and for customers who aren’t on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp OTPs and alerts cost less in Sri Lanka from 1 October 2026. Meta is giving Sri Lankan numbers their own, lower rates for authentication and utility messages. See Meta’s pricing
Hi Nimal, your order #1234 is on its way 📦 It should reach you by Thursday.
482913 is your verification code. For your security, do not share this code.
Thanks! Can I change the delivery address?
SMS or WhatsApp? Use each one for what it does best
WhatsApp isn’t a replacement for SMS. It’s a better channel for some messages and a worse one for others. Here’s how we see it.
| SMS through Notify.lk | WhatsApp by Notify.lk | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Promotions, bulk campaigns and customers without WhatsApp | OTPs, order and delivery alerts, reminders and conversations |
| Reaches | Any mobile phone, no data needed | Phones with WhatsApp installed |
| Shows as | Your Sender ID | Your approved business name, logo and profile |
| Buttons | No | Confirm, Cancel, Track order and more |
| Photos and PDFs | Text only | A photo, video or PDF with the message, such as a product photo or an invoice |
| Receipts | Delivery reports | Delivery and read receipts |
| Replies | Customers can’t reply to a Sender ID | Customers reply, and you answer from the inbox |
| Cost | Rs. 0.40 – 1.10 per SMS plus taxes, depending on your plan | A monthly plan, plus Meta’s fee for each message |
Keep promotions on SMS
A marketing message on WhatsApp costs far more than a promotional SMS through Notify.lk. If you mostly send offers and campaigns, SMS is still the better deal.
Best of both Coming soon
Send on WhatsApp first and fall back to SMS automatically when a message can’t be delivered, through your own Notify.lk account.

We’ll set it up for you
Getting onto WhatsApp’s official platform involves some paperwork with Meta. Our team takes care of it with you, so you can start sending sooner.
- Meta business verification
- Connecting your WhatsApp number
- Getting your first message templates approved
- A walkthrough of the API and the inbox
How it works
-
Connect your WhatsApp number
Verify your business with Meta and connect the number your customers will see.
-
Get your templates approved
Write your OTP, order and reminder messages once. Meta reviews each one, usually within a day.
-
Send through the API
Your system calls one endpoint with the customer’s number, the template and its values.
-
Handle replies
Answer customers in the Chateta inbox.
Coming soon Replies delivered to your own system by webhook.
For your developers
If you already send SMS through our API, sending on WhatsApp will look familiar. One difference: WhatsApp messages that start a conversation use a template Meta has approved, so you send the template’s name and its values instead of free text.

Questions about WhatsApp by Notify.lk
Because two companies are involved. Chateta charges a monthly plan for the platform (the API, templates, webhooks and inbox), in euros, by card. Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, charges for the messages it delivers and bills your own card on your WhatsApp Business Account. We don’t add anything on top of Meta’s fees.
Your Notify.lk SMS account is not affected. It keeps being billed in rupees, as it is today.
Yes. Every business on WhatsApp’s official platform needs a Meta business portfolio (it used to be called Business Manager), and Meta asks most businesses to verify their details. If you don’t have one yet, we’ll set it up with you as part of onboarding.
Yes, if it’s a Sri Lankan number that can receive a verification SMS or call. One catch: a number can’t be on the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app and on the API at the same time. If your number is on the app today, it has to be removed from the app first. Many businesses use a separate number for their API messages instead. We’ll go through the options with you before anything changes.
Of course. Your Notify.lk account, Sender IDs and API integration stay exactly as they are. Most businesses will use both: WhatsApp for OTPs, alerts and conversations, and SMS for promotions and for customers who don’t use WhatsApp. Automatic fallback from WhatsApp to SMS is coming soon.
WhatsApp by Notify.lk runs on Chateta, our WhatsApp platform partner. Chateta is run by Beyond Git, a company in the Netherlands, so the monthly plan is charged by Beyond Git, in euros. Your bank converts the amount to rupees and may add its own fee for foreign-currency payments. Meta’s message fees are charged by Meta, separately.
Yes. It uses Meta’s official WhatsApp Business Platform, and Chateta is an official Meta Tech Partner. No unofficial apps or workarounds are involved.
Yes. A message can carry a link, in the text or on a button such as Track order or Pay now, and a photo, a video or a PDF document at the top. You add the file by its HTTPS link when you send the message through the API.
It costs the same as a text-only message. It counts as one API message on your plan, and Meta’s fee depends on the kind of message (such as a verification code or an order update), not on what it contains.
WhatsApp limits the file size:
- Photos: JPEG or PNG, up to 5 MB
- Videos: MP4 or 3GPP, up to 16 MB
- PDF documents: up to 100 MB
Customers download the file on their phone, so smaller files arrive faster. A PDF invoice or a compressed product photo is usually well under 1 MB.
Once you’ve used your plan’s API messages for the month, further API sends are paused until the limit resets on the 1st. You can move to a bigger plan at any time. Failed sends don’t count towards the limit, and neither do replies your team sends from the inbox. If you expect a busy month, talk to us beforehand.
Yes. AI replies and the website chat widget come with Chateta’s AI plans. When you’re ready you can upgrade from your WhatsApp plan and keep your number, templates and conversations.
